In a move aimed at enhancing attendance monitoring and addressing gaps in professional institutions, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed the Education department to mandate facial recognition systems across all schools and colleges within the state. This directive was reported by Republic.
Under this initiative, the Education department will be tasked with implementing facial recognition technology in classrooms and other educational facilities across the state. The purpose of these systems is to improve attendance tracking and monitor student and staff presence more efficiently.
The Chief Minister’s decision follows a recent consolidation of all construction activities related to schools and colleges, including classrooms, kitchens, and toilets, under the Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (EWIDC). This consolidation includes Young India Integrated Residential Schools as well, and staff and engineers from other departments have been deputed to assist EWIDC in managing these projects.
While the use of facial recognition systems in educational institutions has raised concerns about privacy and potential misuse, the Chief Minister emphasized that the technology will contribute positively to improving attendance and ensuring a high standard of education for students across the state. The specific details regarding the implementation of these systems, including any safeguards or measures to protect student privacy, have not yet been disclosed.
