Deccan Alert | Karnataka Pioneers Gender-Neutral Firefighting Roles with Inclusion of Women Firefighters

In a landmark decision aimed at promoting gender neutrality and inclusivity, the State government of Karnataka has proposed significant changes in the designation of posts within the Fire and Emergency Services Department.

The term “Fireman” will be replaced by the gender-neutral title “Firefighter” in all official records and future recruitment notifications.

This move follows directions issued during a meeting with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which emphasized the need for greater participation of women in fire services across India. The State government has initiated steps to implement these changes, with the process currently underway.

Under the new policy, women will be provided a 10% reservation in direct recruitment to the posts of firefighter and station officer within the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department. Additionally, the designation “Leading Fireman” will be renamed as “Leading Firefighter.”

The changes will be implemented in accordance with the provisions of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Rules, 2013. All future recruitment notifications will reflect the revised nomenclature. The details of the recruitment and training process are yet to be finalized.

Established in 1964, the department plays a crucial role in responding to fire accidents, natural disasters, floods, animal rescues, and enforcing fire safety norms in buildings across Karnataka. The department currently has a sanctioned strength of 7,159 posts, with around 5,200 officers and personnel in service.

Officials are optimistic that this move will enhance gender equality within the force and encourage greater participation of women in emergency response services.
