In a significant move towards empowering women and ensuring their safety, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin unveiled the Tamil Nadu Women Employment and Safety (TNWESafe) project on Tuesday, January 27. The initiative aims to address the employment, empowerment, safety, and welfare of women across all age groups, with a budget allocation of Rs 5,000 crores for its implementation.

The World Bank has pledged Rs 1,250 crores in aid for the project, which encompasses a variety of schemes designed to foster skill development, career support, entrepreneurship, incubation, and more. These include Thirancudar (skill development), Kalangarai (career support), Thozhil Vidhai (entrepreneurship), Thozhilanangu (incubation), Anbu Kudil (CareCube), Womenomics, Women Information Bank, and Synergy.

During the launch event at the Global World Summit, Chief Minister MK Stalin stated his commitment to creating an infrastructure that ensures all educated women can live independently, earn respectable salaries, and become entrepreneurs without fear. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted Chennai’s status as one of the safest cities for women according to various studies. He also emphasized that TNWESafe is India’s first scheme with such extensive support from the World Bank, receiving financial assistance of Rs 1,250 crores.

Prior to the launch, Chief Minister Stalin flagged off autorickshaws driven by women as part of measures aimed at ensuring women’s safety. Additionally, women-only buses have been introduced along five routes in Chennai. The TNWESafe project marks a significant stride towards women’s empowerment and safety in the state of Tamil Nadu.
