In a move aimed at safeguarding public health, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a ban on the production, sale, distribution, and consumption of the cough syrup brand ‘Almond Kit’. The decision comes in response to laboratory tests that confirmed the presence of the toxic chemical ethylene glycol in the product.
Officials from the Drug Control Directorate of Tamil Nadu reported that the syrup, manufactured in Bihar, was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a substance known for causing severe and potentially fatal health complications. Ethylene glycol is often used as an antifreeze but can lead to acute kidney failure, damage to the brain and lungs, and in extreme cases, death.
The ban on ‘Almond Kit’ is expected to safeguard consumers from potential harm and ensure the quality of medicines available in the market. The Drug Control Directorate will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions if required.
