In a significant address on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu outlined the state government’s achievements and future plans, focusing on various welfare initiatives, particularly those aimed at women. During his speech, he emphasized the positive impact of the ‘Vidiyal Payanam’ scheme, which offers free travel for women in government buses within cities. Since its implementation, over 881 crore trips have been taken, resulting in an average monthly savings of ₹888 for each beneficiary.
The finance minister also highlighted several other women-centric schemes that the state government has implemented, including Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, Pudhumai Penn Thittam, and Thozhi hostels. According to Thennarasu, these programs have significantly improved the lives of women, safeguarded their dignity, protected their welfare, and empowered them to become entrepreneurs.
To further promote women’s empowerment, the government has increased its spending on the social sector by more than ₹44,500 crore over the past four years, as part of efforts to maintain economic growth in Tamil Nadu. The finance minister also highlighted various schemes launched for the welfare of children, such as the chief minister’s breakfast scheme, which benefits approximately 19.34 lakh students and has received a total investment of ₹1,284 crore over the past four years.
The minister noted that the scheme not only ensures nutritious breakfast for schoolgoing children but also alleviates the hardship faced by underprivileged mothers. As a result, student attendance has increased and learning outcomes have improved.
In addition to initiatives aimed at women and children, the government has launched schemes to cater to transgender individuals, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens, ensuring no section of society is left out.
Thennarasu also discussed the state’s progress in the health sector through various initiatives like Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, Innuyir Kappom – Nammai Kakkum 48, and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin schemes. He further announced a new scheme aimed at administering cervical cancer vaccines to women in the state.
The finance minister’s speech provided an overview of the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to addressing the needs of various sections of society, with a particular focus on women and children, while also highlighting economic growth and health sector advancements.
