Deccan Alert | Tamil Nadu to Table Interim Financial Statement on Feb 17 After Disappointment Over Union Budget 2026

In a move aimed at addressing the disappointment expressed by the people of Tamil Nadu over the Union Budget 2026, the State’s Finance Minister, Thangam Thennarasu, is set to table the Interim Financial Statement on February 17. The announcement was made by the Assembly Speaker Appavu.

The Interim Financial Statement for the year 2026-27 will be presented in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, outlining the state’s financial plans for the upcoming fiscal year. Additionally, on February 20, the Vote-On-Account (Interim) Demands for Grants for 2026-27 and the Supplementary Demands for Grants for additional expenditure for 2025-26 will be presented under Assembly Rule 189.

In her budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed support for Tamil Nadu in setting up a dedicated rare-earth minerals corridor. The corridors are also planned in Odisha, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Furthermore, seven high-speed railway corridors were announced by the Union Minister, with two located in Tamil Nadu – the Chennai-Hyderabad and Chennai-Bengaluru corridors.

Despite these initiatives, Thennarasu expressed concern that the Union Budget 2026 had overlooked key sectors essential for Tamil Nadu’s growth, such as basic infrastructure development, employment, education, healthcare, and industrial investment. These long-standing demands of the Tamil people have yet to be addressed, according to Thennarasu’s post.
