Deccan Alert | Telangana Advances 14-Point Agenda on Krishna River Water Dispute

In the ongoing inter-state water sharing dispute, the government of Telangana has presented a comprehensive 14-point agenda to the Central Water Commission (CWC) during a meeting convened by the Union Jal Shakti Ministry in New Delhi. The key demands include securing 522 TMC of water from the Krishna River, clearing the Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project, and transferring complete control of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam to Telangana.

At the heart of Telangana’s agenda is a call for the allocation of 188 TMC of water to all Krishna River projects initiated before 2014. In case of temporary allocations, equal distribution – 50% each – between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has been proposed. The government also seeks decisions on utilizing excess water through carry-forward to be made in line with the Bachawat Tribunal’s guidelines.

Among other demands, the modernization of the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) is being advocated for, along with resolving pending issues related to the Srisailam project, Tungabhadra Board, and hydel power generation at Srisailam. The construction of a reservoir at Icchampally to utilize 200 TMC of floodwaters for Telangana’s benefit and addressing submergence concerns within the state under the Polavaram project have also been emphasized.

This move by the Telangana government underscores the urgency with which it is addressing the Krishna water dispute, aiming to ensure a fair distribution of resources vital for irrigation and development purposes in the region.
