Deccan Alert | Telangana Cabinet Approves Municipal Elections for Hyderabad and Other Cities

Hyderabad, January 18 – In a significant decision, the Telangana Cabinet led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy approved the conduct of municipal elections across the state on Sunday. The meeting, held at Medaram in Mulugu district, agreed to hold the polls for the 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations whose terms have expired.

This move marks a significant step towards local governance in Telangana as the elections will be conducted for a total of 2,996 wards and divisions across these administrations. The exact date for the elections has not been announced yet, but it is expected to take place as soon as possible.

The Cabinet meeting held outside Hyderabad, in Medaram ahead of the Medaram Jatara, a mega tribal fair, was the first instance in history where such an influential gathering took place away from the state capital. The decision to hold the meeting outside Hyderabad underscores the ruling government’s commitment to reach out to all corners of Telangana.

The approval for municipal elections comes at a time when the ‘People’s Government’ is making strides in various sectors, aiming to improve infrastructure and services across the state. With the local body elections on the horizon, it is hoped that issues specific to each region will be addressed effectively by representatives elected from within those areas.
