Hyderabad, December 12, 2025 – The Telangana High Court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the state government due to its failure to comply with specific orders related to illegal construction activities within the protected bio-conservation zone surrounding Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.
The judicial body’s decision comes following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in response to allegations of unauthorized construction taking place in this environmentally sensitive area, which is strictly prohibited by existing environmental protection laws and regulations. The High Court had previously directed the state government to take immediate action against such violations.
However, according to reports, the state government did not comply with these orders, leading to the imposition of a fine. The National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) Chairman, SGP Reddy, expressed his displeasure over this situation in a statement earlier this week, stating that such negligence poses significant threats to the environment and must be addressed promptly.
It is worth noting that Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar are crucial water reservoirs for the Hyderabad metropolitan area, making their protection essential to ensure a sustainable water supply for millions of residents.
As the situation develops, further updates will be provided.
