In a significant financial ruling, the Telangana High Court has ordered Geetham University in Hyderabad to pay Rs 54 crores to the South Central Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL) within three weeks. The court’s decision comes after an appeal by SPDCL against a previous interim directive by a single judge that requested electricity supply restoration to the university.
The power distribution company had initially demanded a total of Rs 118 crores in unpaid dues from GITAM University, threatening disconnection if the debt was not settled. The high court’s latest order serves as a warning that failure to comply with the payment could lead to power disconnection for the educational institution.
The ongoing dispute between GITAM University and SPDCL has been escalating over unpaid electricity bills, placing pressure on the university’s financial records. This development is significant in setting a precedent for other institutions facing similar financial challenges with utility providers.
