In a major push towards gender equality in local governance, the Telangana government on Thursday finalised reservations for mayoral and chairperson posts ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, reserving 50 per cent of the positions for women.
Announcing the details at a press conference, Municipal Administration Department Director Sridevi said the move is aimed at increasing women’s participation in grassroots democracy and ensuring balanced representation in urban local bodies.
As part of the reservation exercise, out of 121 municipalities, five posts have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs), 17 for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 38 for Backward Classes (BCs).
The reservations for major municipal corporations have been finalised as follows:
Kothagudem Municipal Corporation: ST General
Ramagundam Municipal Corporation: SC General
Mahabubnagar Municipal Corporation: BC Woman
Mancherial Municipal Corporation: BC General
Karimnagar Municipal Corporation: BC General
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC): Woman General
Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation: General
Khammam Municipal Corporation: Woman General
Nalgonda Municipal Corporation: Woman General
Nizamabad Municipal Corporation: Woman General
Officials said the reservation policy reflects the state’s commitment to inclusive governance and social justice. The announcement has been welcomed by various sections, with many describing it as a significant step towards achieving gender parity in Telangana’s municipal administration.
