In a significant move towards animal welfare and agricultural sustainability, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials in Telangana state to devise a comprehensive policy for cow protection. This policy will aim to establish modern cow shelters (goshalas) in four strategically located areas across the state.
A three-member official committee has been appointed to conduct an extensive study on the establishment of these cow shelters and to explore the cow protection policies of other states. The committee, which includes the Special Chief Secretary to the Animal Husbandry Department, Sabyasachi Ghosh; Principal Secretary to the Endowments Department, Shailaja Ramaiyar; and Secretary of the state Agriculture Department, Raghunandan Rao, will travel to other states for their research.
The decision comes amidst growing concerns over cow protection and the welfare of these important agricultural animals. The committee’s findings are expected to provide insights into effective strategies for cow conservation and the development of sustainable farming practices in Telangana.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Telangana government towards agriculture, animal husbandry, and rural development. With the Animal Husbandry University located in Vemulawada, the state has been at the forefront of agricultural innovation and policy-making in India.
The exact locations for these state-of-the-art cow shelters have yet to be announced. However, the commitment to their establishment underscores the government’s dedication to sustainable farming practices and animal welfare. The policy is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
