In a significant political development in Hyderabad on September 6, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy accused the previous regime of scrapping the Village Revenue Officer (VRO) and Village Revenue Assistant (VRA) systems, which he considers corrupt. He also alleged a 1 lakh crore scam in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.
Speaking at a gathering after handing over appointment letters to the newly recruited Grama Paripalana Officers (GPOs), Revanth Reddy questioned, “Will the BRS leaders scrap their party too, like they did with the VRO and VRA systems?” The Chief Minister also criticized the longevity of other irrigation projects like Nagarjunasagar, Srisailam, SRSP, and Koilsagar compared to the Kaleshwaram project, stating that while the former are still functional decades after construction, Kaleshwaram, constructed by the previous government, collapsed within three years.
The allegations against the previous regime come amidst an ongoing investigation into a 1 lakh crore scam in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. The project was initiated to provide irrigation facilities to Telangana’s arid regions but has been under scrutiny due to reports of financial mismanagement and corruption.
This is not the first time Revanth Reddy has raised concerns over the previous government’s actions. Earlier this year, he accused them of neglecting the development needs of Telangana while diverting funds to other states as part of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by Revanth Reddy, came into power in 2023 and has been actively working on various development projects since then. However, these allegations could potentially strain relations with the previous regime’s leaders who are still active in politics.
