Animal rights activists have accused local authorities in several villages across Telangana of killing over a hundred stray dogs in the past month. The most recent allegations come from Nagarkurnool district’s Thummaipally village, where 100 dogs are said to have been killed using lethal injections over a ten-day period.
Activists claim that these killings were ordered by the village Sarpanch and Panchayat Secretary, who hired individuals for Rs 18,000 to carry out the brutal act. A complaint was lodged at the Charapaka Police Station by Mudavath Preethi, a young activist associated with the Stray Animal Foundation of India. The complaint alleges that the Sarpanch admitted during phone conversations to using poisonous injections and dumping the dog’s bodies two kilometers away from the village.
Based on this complaint, police have registered a case under Section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming animals) read with Section 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 11(1)(a)(i) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
In a separate incident, activists have reported that around 50 stray dogs were illegally captured from Boppapur village in Dubbaka mandal of Siddipet district and relocated to a forest area. A complaint against the village sarpanch and secretary was filed at the Bhoompally Police Station by Adulapuram Goutham.
Police are currently investigating both cases, with no updates provided as yet. Earlier this month, nearly 100 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned to death in Rangareddy district, but their carcasses have yet to be recovered.
The ongoing incidents have sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the treatment of stray animals in Telangana. The authorities are urged to take immediate action against those responsible for these alleged acts of animal cruelty.
