Deccan Alert | High Court Clarifies Role of AI in Judiciary: Human Intelligence Prevails Over AI-Generated Inputs

In a significant development regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judicial system, the High Court has issued a warning against its uncritical usage while delivering judgments. The court emphasized that human intellect must always take precedence over AI-generated inputs in the legal field.

The High Court’s directive comes as a response to concerns about the increasing reliance on AI tools for judicial work. Emphasizing the need for caution, the court urged lower courts to verify the accuracy and relevance of any material cited by AI during legal research.

During a recent hearing, it was brought to light that four judgments cited by a trial court were untraceable. The High Court sought a report on the matter, which revealed that the judicial officer had indeed used AI tools for his research. However, upon investigation, it was found that the legal principle applied in the case was correct, and no error was detected.

In light of this, the High Court dismissed the CRP challenging the lower court’s order. The court observed that the judicial officer had acted correctly in applying the legal principle, thereby reaffirming the primacy of human intelligence over AI-generated inputs in the judicial system.

The High Court’s decision serves as a reminder to the subordinate judiciary about the appropriate use of AI tools and the importance of independent application of mind and adherence to established legal principles in delivering judgments.
