Deccan Alert | BRS Demands Boycott of Delhi Meeting on River Water Disputes Amid Fears Over Godavari Waters

Hyderabad, 30 January 2026 – The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has demanded that the Congress government boycott a forthcoming meeting in Delhi over river water disputes between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The call for boycott comes as Deputy Leader of the BRS Legislature Party, T Harish Rao, expressed concern that Telangana’s interests in the Godavari River could be jeopardized without adequate safeguards.

During a press conference held at Telangana Bhavan, Harish Rao alleged that the meeting, convened by the Central government, is being influenced by Andhra Pradesh and forms part of an effort to advance the contentious Nallamala Sagar project. He warned that the state could lose a significant portion of its Godavari water if Telangana participates without clear protective measures in place.

Harish Rao criticized the State government for sending officials to the meeting, which he described as an attempt to resolve river water disputes but is, in reality, part of a larger conspiracy to further Andhra Pradesh’s irrigation projects. He questioned why Telangana would attend without any assurances from Andhra Pradesh regarding its conditions, such as halting the Development Project Report (DPR) processing and approval procedures related to Nallamala Sagar.

The former Irrigation Minister also highlighted a pattern of systematic cooperation between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on projects like Polavaram and Nallamala Sagar, as well as the weakening of legal and administrative responses to address Telangana’s objections in these matters. He referred to a weak writ filed earlier in the Supreme Court that was later withdrawn as an example.

In addition, Harish Rao pointed out concerns regarding the selection of officials representing Telangana at the meeting, drawing attention to Government Advisor Adityanath Das’s previous work in the matter.
