Deccan Alert | K Annamalai Steps Down as BJP’s Assembly Constituency In-Charge, Cites Father’s Ill Health

In a surprising development, former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K Annamalai has announced his resignation as the party’s in-charge of six Assembly constituencies. The decision was made due to his father’s deteriorating health condition, which requires him to focus on caregiving duties.

Annamalai had been entrusted with overseeing the election process in Singanallur, Madurai South, Virugambakkam, Karaikudi, Srivaikuntam, and Padmanabhapuram constituencies ahead of the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters, the ex-IPS officer turned politician explained that he had requested state BJP president Nainar Nagendran to reassign these constituencies to other party members due to his frequent travel restrictions caused by his father’s health issues.

However, Annamalai expressed his commitment to continue campaigning for the BJP and its alliance partners, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He clarified that the party would decide at an appropriate time whether he would contest in elections or not.

The Tamil Nadu BJP appointed seven leaders as in-charges to manage election-related work in specific Assembly constituencies earlier this year. In response to queries regarding his future focus on Coimbatore, where he contested during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Annamalai emphasized that the party’s main priority was securing victories for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rather than individual aspirations.

In October 2025, Annamalai had expressed his thoughts about his position within the BJP, stating that politics was a voluntary pursuit, and he would continue only as long as he desired. He also dismissed rumors of him forming a new political party, explaining his lack of political backing due to being a first-generation politician from an agricultural family.
