Deccan Alert | Karnataka Government Approves ₹67 Crore AI System to Combat Fake News and Hate Speech Online

In a bid to enhance digital governance and maintain public order, the Karnataka government has approved the deployment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered social media monitoring system in the cabinet held on Thursday.

The system, known as Social Media Analytics Solution (SMAS), is estimated to cost ₹67.20 crore. The AI-based tool aims to combat fake news, misinformation, and emerging online threats in real time across various digital platforms.

According to officials, the system will continuously scan social media platforms, websites, and other communication channels to identify harmful content such as fake news, hate speech, misleading narratives, cyber threats, and online abuse.

The system is also designed to track attempts by terror outfits to recruit individuals through online platforms. Minister HK Patil stated that the Cabinet approved the initiative due to the rapid growth of digital content, making traditional monitoring methods inadequate.

He further added that SMAS would enable the government to keep a closer watch on misinformation and disinformation that could potentially impact public order and social harmony.

The proposed system will analyze large volumes of data to allow quicker identification of potential risks and facilitate faster response by authorities. The government believes that the tool will significantly strengthen digital governance and prevent the misuse of online platforms.

The technical framework of the project will be finalized by the Tender Approval Committee, following which the system will be implemented through an e-tendering process. The Cabinet noted that the initiative is essential to improve Karnataka’s ability to respond swiftly to digital threats and ensure effective oversight of online content.
