In a significant move aimed at addressing allegations of caste-based discrimination, the Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC) has issued directives for the immediate restoration of power and water supply to the residents of Cherabanda Raju Nagar in Hanumakonda. The TSHRC took cognisance of a complaint from 300 residents alleging that their connections were unlawfully disconnected, and they faced caste-based discrimination despite holding valid house-site pattas.
The residents claimed that they had been issued eviction notices, with the actions based on complaints from neighboring societies. However, officials of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation, under which the colony falls, have denied allegations of caste-based discrimination and stated that the supply was cut due to unpaid dues. The officials also asserted that notices were issued to evict those allegedly illegally occupying land.
In response to these complaints, the TSHRC observed that such actions violate constitutional guarantees of equality and the right to life with dignity. Consequently, the Commission directed the District Collector, Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation, and Telangana Power Distribution Company Limited (TG-NPDCL) to immediately restore water and electricity supply and refrain from any coercive eviction measures.
The Commission also advised the Commissioner of Police, Warangal, to prevent caste-based intimidation and ensure protection for the residents. This decision comes as a significant step towards ensuring equal rights and protection for all citizens in Telangana.
