The President of India has appointed Shiv Pratap Shukla, currently serving as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, as the new Governor of Telangana. In a related reshuffle, the incumbent Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, R. N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. The President also appointed Nand Kishore Yadav as the Governor of Nagaland and retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain as the Governor of Bihar. Additionally, the resignation of West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose has been accepted.

Shukla, who has been appointed as Telangana’s new Governor, has a long political career. Hailing from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, he has been actively associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party for decades. Rising from the level of a grassroots worker, he went on to serve as a Union Minister and later as a Governor.

Born on April 1, 1952, Shukla completed his LLB from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University. He entered politics as a student leader through Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

During the The Emergency in India, he actively opposed the government and spent about 19 months in jail. He was first elected as an MLA from Gorakhpur in 1989 and went on to win again in 1991, 1993, and 1996. He served as a minister in the Uttar Pradesh governments led by Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh, and Ram Prakash Gupta, handling portfolios such as prisons and rural development.

In 2016, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. Later, in 2017, he served as Minister of State for Finance in the cabinet of Narendra Modi. Considering his administrative experience and clean public image, the Centre appointed him as the 29th Governor of Himachal Pradesh in February 2023. He has now been transferred to serve as the Governor of Telangana.
