Deccan Alert | Andhra Pradesh Overhauls Urban Governance with Major Ward Redivision

Andhra Pradesh is set to restructure its urban governance with a significant overhaul of wards and divisions across municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats. The move aims to align local representation with population growth and enhance administrative efficiency in cities and towns.

The state government has formally approved the exercise, issuing detailed orders for its implementation. According to officials, urban areas witnessing substantial development will see an increase in elected representatives. This shift marks a departure from the earlier classification system based on administrative grades, moving towards a population-based model for representation.

Separate notifications have been issued for each category – municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats, outlining the revised framework. The anticipated expansion is projected to add around 927 wards to the existing 3,916 divisions and wards in the state, with the total number expected to rise to nearly 4,843 post-reorganisation.

The government has also defined a structured representation system for municipal corporations. Cities with a population of up to two lakh will have 60 divisions; those between two lakh and three lakh, 62 divisions; cities up to four lakh, 66 divisions; up to five lakh, 68 divisions; up to six lakh, 72 divisions; cities between six lakh and ten lakh, 76 divisions; and urban centres with populations between ten lakh and fifteen lakh will have 86 divisions.

This restructuring initiative is expected to provide a more representative and efficient administration in Andhra Pradesh’s urban areas.
