Hyderabad: In a significant move to bolster the Backward Classes (BC) representation, All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized on Friday that upcoming local body elections in Telangana should be conducted only after ensuring 42% reservation for BCs, as promised by the party.

Addressing a meeting with chief minister A Revanth Reddy, deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka, and AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshisundaram, Kharge also underscored the importance of winning both rural and urban local body polls, alongside the Jubilee Hills assembly bypoll.

During the meeting, key issues discussed included SC categorization, caste census, BC quota, appointments to posts in state corporations, and committees. AICC general secretary KC Venugopal was also present during the discussion.

Kharge’s call for 42% reservation for BCs underscores the Congress’ commitment towards uplifting the socially disadvantaged sections of society. The party has promised to fulfill this promise in its election manifesto for the upcoming Telangana legislative assembly elections, if elected to power.

The AICC president’s visit to Hyderabad comes at a crucial time when the Congress is making efforts to strengthen its position in Telangana. The Jubilee Hills assembly bypoll, set to be held soon, is being seen as an important test for the party.
