Union Home Minister Amit Shah initiated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, turning a statewide tour event into a full-fledged election launch in anticipation of the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking to party workers and supporters, Mr. Shah expressed his confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure victory in the politically significant state.

In his address, the union Home minister took a combative stance against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), launching a sharp attack on the party’s leaders. Mr. Shah accused the DMK of practicing dynastic politics and criticized their handling of corruption and women’s safety issues.

The BJP’s election campaign comes as the party looks to make inroads into Tamil Nadu, which has historically been a stronghold of regional parties such as the DMK and AIADMK. The upcoming Assembly elections are expected to be closely contested, with the BJP aiming to capitalize on its growing influence in national politics and expanding base across India.

In response, the DMK dismissed the allegations, labelling the BJP as ‘anti-Tamil’ and asserting they will never form a government in the state. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin is set to launch a free laptop scheme today, aiming to distribute 20 lakh units to students.

The Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu are scheduled to take place during April-May 2026, coinciding with several other regional polls across India. The outcome of these elections will have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of the country, as regional parties continue to play a crucial role in determining the composition of the national government.

In the run-up to the elections, both the BJP and DMK are expected to intensify their campaigns, reaching out to voters across Tamil Nadu. The campaign launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah marks the beginning of an intense political battle in one of India’s most politically vibrant states.
