In a significant revision of electoral rolls, approximately 97.3 lakh names have been removed from the voter lists in Tamil Nadu, with over 73.7 lakh names deleted in Gujarat. The special intensive revision aimed to eliminate duplicate entries and those who had either changed their residences or passed away.

Data released by the respective chief electoral officers revealed that out of the 97 lakh entries removed in Tamil Nadu, a substantial 66.4 lakh citizens had relocated, while 26.9 lakh had unfortunately passed away. Additionally, 3.9 lakh individuals were found to be enrolled more than once across multiple locations.

The decision has raised concerns among political circles in both states, especially as the deadline for citizens to file claims or objections if their names have been removed is fast approaching on January 18, 2026. This development could potentially impact voter turnout and political outcomes during upcoming elections in these regions.

Meanwhile, in Bihar, ongoing assembly elections are experiencing unprecedented competition between the ruling NDA alliance and opposition parties. With just days left until voting concludes, the removal of names from voter lists in other parts of India could offer insight into the potential challenges faced by election authorities in ensuring accurate and inclusive voter rolls for the upcoming election in Bihar.
