The Government of Maharashtra has announced that the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan award for this year will be conferred upon esteemed sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the man behind the creation of the iconic Statue of Unity – the world’s tallest statue. This announcement comes as a recognition of Sutar’s immense contribution to the field of art and sculpture, not only in India but globally. The decision to honor Sutar with the state’s highest award underscores his significance in the Indian art landscape and his role in elevating it on the world stage.
Renowned for his remarkable sculptural works, Ram Vanji Sutar’s journey in the realm of art has been both long and illustrious. Born in 1925, Sutar’s passion for sculpture began in his early years, leading him to pursue a diploma in Sculpture and Modelling from the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. Over the decades, he has sculpted more than 50 public sculptures around the country, but it was the Statue of Unity that brought him unparalleled fame. Standing at a staggering height of 182 meters, the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel not only symbolizes India’s unity and integrity but also showcases Sutar’s masterful craftsmanship and dedication to his art.
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Sutar was honored with the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016, two of India’s highest civilian awards. These acknowledgments highlight his standing as one of the preeminent sculptors in India, whose works have been pivotal in shaping the course of contemporary Indian sculpture. The Maharashtra Bhushan award, established in 1996 to recognize excellence in literature, art, sport, and science, further accentuates Sutar’s pivotal role in enriching India’s cultural heritage.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive the Maharashtra Bhushan award. This recognition is not only for me but for all those who have supported and believed in my vision throughout the years,” said Ram Vanji Sutar, reflecting on the announcement of his award. His words resonate with a sense of gratitude and highlight his humble approach towards his monumental achievements.
The conferment of the Maharashtra Bhushan award on Sutar is a testament to the resilience, imagination, and dedication that mark his work. It serves not only as recognition of his individual genius but also shines a spotlight on the broader field of Indian sculpture, encouraging a new generation of artists to explore and innovate within this rich traditional form of expression.
