Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced the formation of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforceement (EAGLE), replacing the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau.

In a significant move towards combating the drug menace in Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced the formation of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforceement (EAGLE), replacing the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau. The new entity is expected to intensify surveillance and enforcement against drug-related activities.

Speaking at a programme to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Shilpakala Vedika, Revanth emphasized that Telangana has begun efforts to curb drugs and ganja cultivation. He mentioned several iconic figures from Telangana who had fought against the menace of drugs, including Doddi Komuraiah, Sarvai Papanna, among others.

The announcement comes amidst growing concerns over drug abuse in the state, with leaders from various political parties expressing their commitment to addressing this issue. In recent months, there have been several high-profile cases involving politicians and celebrities associated with drug-related activities.

However, the announcement has received mixed reactions from political circles. The BJP, in a statement, expressed its support for the move but criticized the delay in implementing such measures earlier. On the other hand, the Congress party, while welcoming the initiative, questioned the effectiveness of similar previous initiatives and demanded greater transparency in the functioning of EAGLE.

Meanwhile, Vishweshwar Reddy, a BJP leader, has requested the Chief Minister to involve civil society organizations and experts in the drug control efforts. He stated, “It is crucial that we involve all stakeholders, including NGOs, health professionals, and community leaders, in our fight against drugs.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Hyderabad earlier this week, had also emphasized the need for coordinated efforts at the state and central levels to combat drug trafficking. His statement, however, was met with some criticism from sections of the media who perceived it as a politically motivated move.

As the EAGLE takes shape in the coming weeks, it remains to be seen how effectively it can tackle the drug menace in Telangana and whether it will face the same challenges that previous anti-narcotics bodies have encountered. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
