In a contentious statement made during the 375th birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud at Hyderabad’s Ravindra Bharati, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of blocking two bills aimed at providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) and an ordinance passed by the state Congress government to do away with the 50% cap on reservations.
In his speech, Reddy suggested that if Modi or a Union minister has any issues with Rahul Gandhi, they should file cases against him. However, he asserted that blocking the BC Bills is unfair.
The criticism comes amidst ongoing debates over reservation policies in India. The Telangana government had passed these bills and the ordinance with the intention of empowering the state’s Backward Classes, who have been demanding increased representation for decades. However, the Union government has not yet given its approval to these legislations.
It is important to note that this is not the first time such a criticism has been levied against the Prime Minister. In recent times, Modi has faced similar accusations from various political quarters over his handling of reservation policies and other issues related to social justice.
The Union government, however, has maintained its stand on the matter, stating that it is committed to ensuring fairness and equality in all aspects of governance. The BJP, the ruling party at the center, has not yet issued an official response to Reddy’s statement.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has hailed Reddy’s statement as a bold step towards fighting for the rights of the state’s Backward Classes. The party has been vocal about its opposition to the BJP’s policies on reservations and social justice issues in general.
