Hyderabad: In a significant interstate water-sharing meeting to be held in New Delhi on Wednesday, the Telangana Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, will participate despite the state’s strong opposition to discuss Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram-Penakacherla Link Project.
The meeting, convened by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, comes at a critical juncture as Telangana aims to push for approvals on its Krishna-Godavari projects and seek national status for key water schemes. The state’s stance is in opposition to Andhra Pradesh’s proposed Banakacherla project, which will not be part of the discussions in Delhi.
As per the latest reports, Telangana is willing to engage in broader water allocation issues concerning the Krishna and Godavari rivers during the meeting. However, it has made clear that it will not participate in any discussions regarding Andhra Pradesh’s Banakacherla project, which is the main agenda proposed by the neighboring state.
The interstate water disputes have been a matter of contention for several years now, with both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh voicing their concerns over resource allocation from the Krishna and Godavari rivers. The Supreme Court has been closely monitoring the situation, with its recent sentiments leaning towards moderation on this sensitive issue.
