Deccan Alert | Telangana Government Petitions Supreme Court to Halt Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar Link Project

In a move aimed at preserving the interests of its citizens, the Telangana government has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court requesting a halt to the Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar Link Project. The submission comes amid concerns that the ongoing infrastructure project could potentially violate the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, and interstate agreements.

The petition seeks to prevent further advancements, approvals, or funding for the project as it stands to cause substantial submergence within Telangana’s territories, affecting multiple districts including Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mulugu. If executed without due consideration of interstate agreements, it could result in an imbalance in water distribution between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has been urged to withhold necessary clearances and approvals for the Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar Link Project until the matter is fully addressed by the Supreme Court. The filing underscores the importance of adhering to stipulated water distribution agreements, maintaining interstate harmony, and preserving the rights and welfare of all parties involved.

The case represents a significant step in the ongoing political discourse surrounding water resource management among Indian states. As the issue unfolds, it is expected that both the Supreme Court and the Central Water Commission will play crucial roles in mediating and resolving interstate disputes.
