In a significant political move, a delegation of BJP leaders led by R Ashoka and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leaders of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Council respectively, petitioned Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Monday.

The petition requested Gehlot not to give his assent to the Hate Speech Bill, which the BJP leaders described as “draconian”, “a direct attack on free speech” and “a tool for political vendetta”.

The delegation also submitted a memorandum to the Governor demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Ballari clashes. Additionally, they raised concerns over illegal house demolitions in Kogilu and alleged erosion of law and order, and misuse of police machinery in the State, with reference to a Hubballi incident where a woman BJP worker was disrobed by the police.

The petition comes amidst growing criticism from political parties and civil society organizations against the Hate Speech Bill, which they argue would curb free speech and be used to suppress dissenting voices. The bill, if passed into law, could impose heavy penalties on individuals found guilty of promoting hatred or enmity between different groups.

Responding to the BJP’s petition before the Governor, Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara said that the state government has already held detailed discussions with the Governor regarding the Hate Speech Bill.

“We have explained to the Governor the kind of social consequences the society may face if such a law is not in place. The bill was passed in both the houses when the opposition were creating ruckus instead of debating on the matter,” he said.

Parameshwara added that the government is open to dialogue and clarification. “If the BJP has any doubts or confusion, the state government is ready to clarify them at any time,” he said.
