In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh government has secured over 1,200 hectares of revenue land for a new research and development campus by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Anakapalli district. The move is intended to bolster BARC’s nuclear research work and support national requirements linked to energy and defence.
The project, currently under review by the Expert Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, will witness BARC expanding its footprint in the south of India. The new campus will contribute to the advancement of nuclear technology in the country while catering to energy and defence sector needs.
BARC has also sought permission to divert 148.15 hectares of adjoining forest land for strategic positioning purposes, a request that is yet to be granted. The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department is expected to make a decision on the matter in the near future.
